"Just when will you wake up..?"Shall we all take a look to see just what a character study this is to Ryoga?
First of all, this is the first real, quiet, almost intimate moment we’ve seen him have with Rio. Just the two of them, alone. No friends, no doctors… nothing. It’s just a brother, worried about a sister.
Throughout ZeXal, and ZeXal II, we’ve seen Ryoga as the stoic, arrogant, brash rival who serves as a contrast and support to Yuma, through direct and almost brutal means. He cares for people, but never opens up much (with the exception of his goat-haired boyfriend, but we’ll get to that later), wanting to be left alone.
But here? Look at him. He’s a fourteen year old boy, just wanting to see his little sister laugh, be cocky, argue with him, and duel. But overall, he just wants her to be happy again. Do these two even need a reason to be so precious to each other?
Well, let’s analyse this scene. Rio, who we haven’t really gotten to know at this point, is pretty much a plot-point. She serves as the ‘little sister’ that the brother has to fight for. But we get something we barely ever get in anime. We get to see why. In Joey’s case in the original DM, Serenity seemed to be going down the right path, but she never really had much of an introduction. But with Rio, she’s built up. We see the revenge before we see the person. And when we see a quiet scene like this, genuine human interaction is seen, and we feel for Ryoga.
This is Ryoga at his most humane. Just look at that face in the last gif. That is genuine heartbreak, a realistic emotion that I haven’t seen since the brilliance of Ed and Al from Full Metal Alchemist.
That’s right. These two have as much a bond, as much a chemistry of greatness, as the Elric Brothers. Because they both want to fight for each other, even if it’s only explored a little here. We know Rio is important to Ryoga - she wouldn’t have wanted to give him those rings. Personally, I think she went to fight IV because she wanted to prove that she could match up to Ryoga, to fight someone as strong as IV. But in the end, that’s what drove Ryoga to cheat. She begged him to win in her steed - the proud, noble Kamishiro, and that drove him to cheat.
They love each other. Rio is everything to Ryoga, as is he to her.
I honestly think Ryoga is the most well-rounded character in the entire franchise. He didn’t need to have any tragedy of aliens (though it’s implied lately), space cancer, or even a disappearing father shrouded in mystery to make us like him.
What made us, as a fandom, love him? Simple.
We saw a teenager, breaking apart because of his love for his sister.

ive never drawn anyone from zexal before bu t rikki and usagi wanted alit so i tried
